My ragdoll cat is very intersted in the ringtail possums that live in my area. As one of the possums is very friendly towards me I’ve been introducing her to Ella over the last few nights. Last night I filmed them getting ‘up close’, and as you’ll see the possum was not at all worried even when Ella was on the ground underneath her which was interesting as the possum is very wary of other cats in the area. Note: the camera angles can make it look like Ella was very close to the possum, most of the time she was 15-20cm away and being restrained in such a way that she would not be able to lunge forward or swipe the possum, if she had attempted any action with her arms she could only move them out sideways not forwards. When on the ground under the possum she wanted to get closer, however she has no idea how to jump that high (even though its only about 1 metre!). Once the possum had left she got very upset as she had been enjoying watching her new friend Update June 2011: 2 months have passed and Ella loves her ‘special time’ with the possum. Ella will sit by the back door once it gets dark and wait for her friend. If Ella is asleep I just need to say “Ella, Possum” and she’ll be at the door waiting in under 5 seconds!
