HOW TO: Part 1 BARF Tutorial for Cats

MEAT GRINDER USED:ALFA MC5 Super Meat Grinder. NOTE: I have been using this primarily for making raw cat food, grinds all the meat and bones easily with no trouble at all. RECIPE USED IS FROM CATINFO.ORG: Please check back to this webpage periodically for any updates to the recipe. Please note that I do not recommend this recipe for cats with CKD (chronic kidney disease) – formerly known as CRF. See comments below. I use the following ingredients – in amounts listed – per 3 pounds of raw meat/bones/skin. * 1 cup water (or, preferably, more if your cat will eat it with more water) * 2 eggs – use the yolk raw but lightly cook the white (see update below) * 2000 mg wild salmon or fish oil (a good source of essential fatty acids) * 400 IU (268 mg) Vitamin E (powdered E in capsules is the easiest to use) * 50 mg Vitamin B-complex (capsules or tablets) * 2000 mg taurine (use powdered – either in capsules or loose) * 3/4 tsp Morton Lite salt with iodine when using chicken parts – see below** (Contains potassium and sodium. Make sure that it contains iodine.) * Liver – If using ground rabbit (which includes liver) from wholefoods4pets.com, do not add additional liver. If using chicken legs, thighs or a whole chicken carcass minus the organs, add 4 ounces of chicken livers per 3 lb of meat/bones/skin. * Psyllium – I no longer use psyllium in my cats’ food. Most pet foods are formulated to meet minimum nutritional requirements. Wild Kitty Cat Food is formulated with all-natural whole-food ingredients for maximum nutrition. There is now clinical evidence that a biologically-appropriate, high-density, high-protein diet may play a role in managing some feline health issues, primarily FUS (Feline Urological Syndrome) and Feline Diabetes.

Struvite crystals are also referred to as triple phosphate (magnesium ammonium phosphate), and when several crystals join together to form stones, they can become life-threatening to the cat. These stones can range in shape and size, and when they block the urinary tract, they can quickly lead to kidney failure. The incidence of struvite crystals in cats coincides exactly with the advent and widespread use of dry commercial cat foods. These diets became popular in the 1970′s, and since that time, cats have been subjected to this very painful and unnecessary condition. (These ‘foods’ were not developed for the optimal health of cats, but rather for the convenience of the owner, and for the profits of the commercial pet food manufacturers.) The cause of struvite crystals in cats is dry commercial pet foods. Due to the lack of moisture in the diet, the urine becomes too concentrated, and due to the use of plant-based ingredients in dry kibble, the urine becomes too alkaline. An alkaline environment in very concentrated urine predisposes struvite formation. Struvite crystals do not tend to appear in a more acidic environment and where the urine is more dilute. The cat is not a natural water drinker, as it has evolved over millions of years, in a very arid part of the planet, and derived most of its moisture from its prey.
