  • How do I get my cat to stop peeing on my rug?

Question by J T: How do I get my cat to stop peeing on my rug?
My cat has been peeing on my area rug in the living room. Recently it peed on our guest bed as well. How do I get it to stop? Is there any spray, herb, etc that I purchase that will detour the cat from such areas?

  • How will adding another cat to my household change my lifestyle?

Question by Cheeb: How will adding another cat to my household change my lifestyle?
I’m considering adopting a sweet 9 year old cat from a local shelter. Right now, I have a 3.5 year old cat who’s not too active but not very lazy either. I’m not really worried about introducing them, but how will having two cats be different from having just one? I’d really love some input from cat owners who have gone through this change.

P.S. Are there any special things I need to do to accomodate the older cat?

We have “gone through” many cats in the past years, and they usually do fine. My suggestion would be to keep the new cat in his carrier for a little while, and let the other one come up and sniff it. Moniter them and look for any signs of aggression. If the cats act friendly towards eachother, it should be OK to let the new one out. Also, sometimes it’s good to buy a senior cat chow. I would suggest Purina, as they have food for all the different stages of life. Good Luck!

  • What diseases should a new cat coming into an established cattery be tested for?

Question by EcoChartreuse: What diseases should a new cat coming into an established cattery be tested for?
I have established a small cattery, a couple of kittens from the same breeder now i want to bring in another from a different breeder. My vet said my kittens were disease free and did not require the cat flu vacine.
Should I give it to them now i am getting another from a different breeder ad what other diseases should I test the new cat for before introducing her.

all kittens there should be up to date with their vaccinations, you should test for feline leukemia and FIV on every kitten that comes in and make sure they are up to date on their vaccinations as well.

  • Q&A: How long does it take for a cat to heal from being neutered?

Question by Nicole: How long does it take for a cat to heal from being neutered?
My kitten will be being neutered within the next 2 months. He is going to be 6 months and at the moment he is a very hyperactive cat and he doesn’t get along with my girl cat who has already been spayed. How long will it take for him to heal? Will he still be hyperactive? Will he get along better with my female cat after?

i think my cat healed after about a month or so but i think that she played a lot so her wound healed slower

  • How do I train my cat to stop clawing at the furniture?

Question by ST: How do I train my cat to stop clawing at the furniture?
I have cat posts and cat scratchers, but she still prefers the couch and chairs. I would put the corner things on the arms, but she scratches all parts of the couch.

    Answer by Bozema
Have you tried trimming her claws? I do my cat’s about once a month and it does help. I taught him to tolerate it by giving him a crunchie for each claw clipped. It took time and patience but he puts up with it now and thinks its a game. A vet or groomer can do this as well for a fairly minimal cost.

Also I have heard that wrapping the base of the furniture in heavy duty plastic wrap (available from moving companies) temporarily while retraining the cat to use scratching posts can help. The jute type scratching posts (instead of carpeted ones) work better.

  • How do I know what kind of cat food is good for my cat?

Question by : How do I know what kind of cat food is good for my cat?
My cat has been eating this brand of cat food but I don’t know if its good for him. Because he always diarrhea’s in the house without clawing at the door like he used too. I’m not sure if its something he eats outside either.

    Answer by NoraCat
You should bring your cat to a vet right away, since diarrhea could have many different causes, some serious, and many that have nothing to do with what food he eats.

Anyway, the best food for cats is food that is mostly just meat, and which doesn’t include by-products, fillers, or non-meat foods. In nature, cats only eat other animals – they don’t eat vegetables, etc.

We feed our cat this food: http://www.wellnesspetfood.com/cat-wellness.aspx but any kind of cat food that is not the cheapest is probably OK.

  • How can I tell if a male cat has been neutered?

Question by : How can I tell if a male cat has been neutered?
I adopted a cat from a shelter and they said he was neutered. I have doubts due to:
    1) My spayed female utterly hates him and is aggressive on sight.
    2) After scuffles with the female, he has a strong cat musk scent which is occasionally left as a drop or two on the floor in a very thick clear liquid.
    3) He wrestles with my neutered male in a very rough & tumble way. Not aggressive, just that very rough is normal to him.
    4) I noticed later on that the adoption papers indicate he is a shorthair with a short tail although it has always been obvious to be a longhair with long tail, he definitely has some maine coon in his line somewhere.

I think the shelter mixed up their cats. How can I tell if he’s been neutered? Going to the vet will cost $ 35 for the answer, I’d like to avoid that if there is an easier way. Thanx in advance!
Thanx all. I thought the testacles were removed in that procedure. I just didn’t want to go rummaging around my cat’s nut sack until I was completely sure that’s how you tell. Now I have to root through all that fur to find them, easier said than done on this cat!

    Answer by KitKat
You should be able to tell by looking. An un-neutered male will have very obvious testicles.

  • How can I get my cat to stop hissing at my new dog?

Question by hotmetalfreeq: How can I get my cat to stop hissing at my new dog?
We’ve had our new puppy for about 3 months now. My cat is almost 2 years old and she still wont have anything to do with the dog. The dog really like the cat and wants to play with her. But she just hisses and runs off. Is there anything I can do to help the situation?

    Best answer:

    Answer by Tim
Cats are very territorial animals. She was there first and may never get used to the dog. Intorducing new animals to a cat you should keep them separated for a long time (a few weeks) before introducing them, just so the cat can get used to the scents.

  • What are these nodules my cat is developing?

Question by : What are these nodules my cat is developing?
I have an eleven year old insulin-dependent diabetic cat. Over the past month she has developed at least three small raised bumps on her ears and neck. They don’t seem to be causing her any discomfort; they don’t bleed or scab over. They seem to just be fleshy lumps.

Are these related to her diabetes? Any ideas what they might be? She is an indoor cat, so it’s unlikely to be melanoma or insect-related. Thoughts?

    Best answer:

    Answer by RoVale
I know this might be a bit of a stretch here but the only thing I can think of is that it could be caused by a food allergy. Cats with food allergies will often develop skin conditions such as hair loss and skin irritations. Did her diet get changed recently?
